Yes, you will need a car. There is no convenient public transportation to the Castle and no shops within walking distance. If you wish, we can arrange an auto rental with pick up at the airport, at the train station or even directly at the castle. It is also possible to engage a car with driver at your disposition during your stay (book ahead).

Though located in one of the loveliest and most unspoiled parts of Tuscany, Montalto is very accessible:

• The major Italian highway (A1, the "Autostrada del Sole") is just half an hour away (30 km/19 miles enter at Valdarno to the north or Valdichiana to the south).
• The Florence airport is less than 1½ hours away. The Pisa airport is about two hours away, while the drive from the Rome airport takes three hours.
• There are train stations at 12 km/7 miles (Rapolano) for trains to the south and at 18 km/11 miles (Bucine) for trains to the north.
• The nearest restaurant is at 3 km/2 miles from Montalto.
• The nearest town, Castelnuovo Berardenga, is 10 km/6 miles away. There you can find grocery stores, pharmacy, bank, post office, etc.

Yes, definitely. All the homes are close together and there are various common areas at your disposal and activities for every age. A large common kitchen can be reserved for private use with a dining space for your entire group. You can be as connected or as independent as you like, with a part-time concierge to assist in organizing your stay.

There is no bar or restaurant at Montalto but every house has a full kitchen and, in addition:

• An optional buffet breakfast is available from 15 May to 15 October. During the rest of the year breakfast is available only if booked in advance and for a minimum of 10 people.
• Cooked meals are available upon advance request, prepared by a local cook and brought to your house or served in a common dining room.
• Hands-on cooking classes can be organized at Montalto, with dinner to follow. We can also help book you into a formal cooking school. Please contact us to reserve in advance.

If you are interested in dining out you will find many excellent restaurants within range of the castle, the nearest is just about 3 km/2 miles away. We have compiled an informative guide to the many local restaurants and we keep it up to date based on the experience of our guests.

Montalto is on a hill and not organized for wheelchairs. Scuola and Voliera (2 persons each), are most easily accessed, as they are right off the road and have no steps throughout. Contact us before arrival for every special need, we will be glad to assist you.

Montalto is perfect for special events such as family reunions, weddings, anniversaries, renewal of vows and commitment ceremonies, incentive trips and other social or corporate events.

In addition to a range of accommodations for event guests, we offer banquet facilities, a conference room that can seat up to 100 people, a charming old chapel, and varying degrees of planning assistance to suit your needs – all in a lovely unique, historical setting.

Yes, we can provide Italian or even English speaking babysitters, if arranged in advance .

Pets are allowed in some, but not all, houses; they are subject to an extra cleaning fee and require special permission, so please be sure to ask in advance.

The larger houses at Montalto are equipped with private washing machines, see individual house description. In addition there is a common laundry room with two washing machines, drying lines and a coin-operated dryer. Irons and ironing boards are available on request.

No, we can't accept foreign currencies. There is no problem with foreign credit-card payments, the bank will apply the current exchange rate to convert your currency into euro.

Montalto has thousand-year-old walls which are quite thick and keep the houses cool naturally if you remember to keep the shutters closed on the sunny side of the house. The only houses equipped with air conditioning (available for an extra fee) are Scuola and Voliera.
