San Giovanni West is on the lower floor of the San Giovanni building, an old stone house within the castle walls. It has a combined living-dining room with kitchen area and full size stove and refrigerator.

There are two bedrooms, each with a bathroom en suite. In one bedroom the beds can be united as a queen or separated as twin singles, in the other bedroom the bed is necessarily queen. Both bathrooms have shower stalls (no tub).

San Giovanni West is part of the San Giovanni building, which also includes San Giovanni Eat and La Loggia. The three apartments of the San Giovanni building can be interconnected and rented together to accommodate up to 16 people.

Interesting Facts:

The large San Giovanni building commands an ample view of the valley below. Perhaps for this reason it seems to have been the first fortification on the site.

The original construction appears to have been three Longobard towers, erected around 700 AD, and in Berardenga times the building was probably a barracks.

Eventually the middle tower collapsed partially, while the once defensive castle continued life as a peaceful agricultural center.

A small window framed by “pietra serena” (a grey sand stone typical of Tuscan historic architecture, extracted from quarries at Fiesole, Arezzo, Cortona and Volterra) is still visible on the outside of the wall facing the valley, though it has long been walled over on the inside. You may be able to see it looking back from the castle walls.
